Name: Matthew Kelly Instruments: Guitar & Mandolin Height: 5' 7" Thanks for visiting my page. Its been a while coming so you might as well have the whole story: I was born in Douglas on Monday 23rd November 1981 at 11:33AM and lived in Foxdale for nearly four years before moving (with my family) to Douglas where I have lived ever since. I started at St. Thomas' Primary School in 1986 where I met Gilno (and some other people) and started my education. |
During my time there I started learning music through violin lessons aged 8 or 9 which then led to me joing the Manx Youth Orchestra in 1992. It was there that I met David and Adam and realised how much better than me they were at playing the violin. I carried on anyway but also started learning the electric guitar, taught at first by my dad and later by local guitar expert Trevor Nelson. I joined St. Ninian's High School in 1993 with Gilno and Adam, meeting Russell soon afterwards. David was already there in his second year so he was the one we all looked up to and respected (we still do - he's a karate expert!). At that time I had no experience of celtic music at all but was luckily drafted into King Chiaullee because I knew a few chords. I than borrowed Adam's acoustic guitar (and Russell borrowed his bodhran) for three years before finally buying my own (cheapskate?, me?) getting better and more familiar with the style of music all the time, and surviving the various changes in group members as well. Not being particularly good at the violin, I decided to put the things I had learned to better use by buying a mandolin and learning some tunes on that, even writing some of my own. I've written one and a half tunes on it so far, but I've only had it for five years.
